Polymers are compounds that are sensitive to heat, shear and oxygen. Exposure of polymers to heat and shear force during the process alone can cause a cut in the molecular chains, resulting in the destruction of the polymer and reducing its aesthetic and functional characteristics. Also, exposure to oxygen leads to the initiation of the spontaneous oxidation process. These destructive reactions through the creation of free radicals in some polymers cause chains to break (decrease in molecular weight) and in others cause transverse connections between chains (increase in molecular weight) and cause adverse effects such as creating surface cracks, changing color (yellowing of the product), reduction of mechanical properties, etc.

 

In this regard, antioxidants are used to prevent or delay the oxidative degradation reactions of polymers that occur both during the process (short-term stability) and during consumption (long-term stability). Antioxidants are organic compounds that inhibit degradation processes by reacting with free radicals and breaking them down.

 

Iranian Basta Polymer antioxidant masterbatches with Benox® brand are produced using first and second type antioxidants and based on different polymers. These masterbatches prevent the destruction and oxidation of polymers at high process temperatures and oxidizing agents, and increase the environmental resistance of the polymer and increase the product’s lifespan.
